State gas tax goes into effect this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Drivers looking to refuel this weekend should expect to pay two more cents per gallon more at the pump.

This is the final phase of the Alabama gasoline tax that came into effect as part of the rebuilding of the Alabama Act in 2019.

The tax increased by six cents in 2019 and two cents last year.

“We probably won’t notice it much anyway, as I think it’s going to kind of be absorbed by our slow decline that we typically see at this time of year,” the director of public relations and marketing said. from the AAA, Clay Ingram.

Ingram says the best way to save money at the pump is to shop gas stations for the price that’s right for you.

“You know, it’s like buying clothes,” said Daniel McCall, a Montgomery resident.

McCall says it costs between $ 39 and $ 45 to refuel his vehicle, but says it takes a long time for him to find the right price.

“Now Sam has the best price, but when it goes down you just have to buy gas and there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s the law of the land, it’s the law, ”McCall said.

The gasoline tax is the first for the state in 30 years, and the tax money will help the state’s roads and bridges.

“To have these good, pleasant, smooth, easy-to-ride roads is a wonderful thing,” said Ingram.
